Maria Grazia Chiuri, creative director of Christian Dior, released a charity capsule collection on Friday in collaboration with South African designer, Thebe Magugu. The collection, available in flagship stores in LA, Paris and New York, is a modern reinterpretation of Christian Dior’s New Look, and is raising money for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project – a charity investing in the health and education of young people in South Africa.
Magugu, who won the LVMH Prize in 2019 and has continued to gain visibility and relevance in fashion ever since, was tasked by Chiuri to reimagine the iconic silhouette through his contemporary feminist vision.
The outcome comes in the form of six limited edition wardrobe staples: an oversized t-shirt emblazoned with Magugu’s sisterhood emblem, styled for the New Look with a sheer, pleated tulle skirt. The accessories are typical of a Chiuri Dior collection, featuring a bucket hat and tote bag each stamped with Dior’s oblique pattern along with the Diorcamp boots and a silk scarf. However, these editions come with Magugu’s signature yellow accents and, like the tee, feature the sisterhood emblem.
Telling the story behind the collaboration in a short video on Dior’s YouTube, Magugu described the collection as: “A perfect cross between the Dior and Thebe Magugu universe.” Theron explained how proud she was of the representation of South African values.
